ERPM 3.2 — Engine Start Checks
Purpose
Ensure the main engine and auxiliaries are fit for service and safe to start in accordance with company procedures and Class rules.
Scope
All vessels when a main engine start is planned.
Responsibilities
- Chief Engineer — authorizes start; verifies completion of checks.
- Duty Engineer — performs checks; records findings; coordinates with bridge.
Prerequisites
- Maintenance tasks closed; critical NCs cleared.
- LO/FO systems within operational parameters; fuel changeover as applicable.
Procedure
- Mechanical — LO pressure, jacket water temp/levels; turning gear disengaged; drains as applicable.
- Controls & Interlocks — ahead/astern tested; remote control to bridge verified; shutdowns/trips cleared.
- Lubrication & Cooling — LO purifiers/filters ΔP acceptable; cooling pumps standby ready.
- Air System — starting air pressure within limits; receivers drained; no leaks.
- Alarms — critical alarms acknowledged and functional (shutdowns/slowdowns).
- Communication — confirm engine control position; Bridge–ER comms.
- Record — complete form ECL-05; attach supporting evidence if any.
Acceptance Criteria
Readings within limits; interlocks functional; no critical alarms; documentation completed.
