BMM 4.1 — Bridge Preparation for Departure

Purpose

Ensure the bridge, equipment, and team are fully prepared for a safe and compliant departure.

Scope

All vessels, prior to departure from any port/anchorage.

Responsibilities

  • Master — overall responsibility and final go/no-go decision.
  • OOW — completes checks and logs readiness.
  • Pilot/Mooring Team — integrates with bridge team brief.

Prerequisites

  • Passage plan prepared and reviewed; UKC/tides/traffic considered.
  • Bridge team brief held (roles, comms, contingencies).
  • Applicable notices/permits completed (e.g., Hot Work stop, etc.).

Procedure

  1. Navigation Data — ECDIS/Charts updated; route checked; safety contours; no-go areas set.
  2. Equipment — Gyro(s), magnetic compass error, GPS, radars, AIS, VHF, echo sounder, BNWAS set.
  3. Alarms/Tests — Off-course, gyro repeaters, bridge wing controls; check hand-steering station.
  4. Comms — Check Bridge–Engine Room, internal, and external comms; pilot comms ready.
  5. Documents — Port clearance, pilot cards, tug orders, passage plan printout as needed.
  6. Record — Note completion in bridge log; attach any required checklists.

Acceptance Criteria

All bridge systems operational; passage plan verified; team brief complete; records updated.
