BMM 4.2 — Steering Gear Test
Purpose
Ensure the vessel’s steering gear is tested and confirmed operational within 2 hours before departure, in compliance with SOLAS V/26 and company requirements.
Scope
All vessels. Applies prior to departure and after repairs affecting steering.
Responsibilities
- Master — ensures compliance and signs off record.
- OOW — conducts bridge-side tests and logs results.
- Duty Engineer — verifies mechanical readiness in steering flat.
Prerequisites
- Bridge ↔ Steering Flat communications established.
- Gyro and autopilot powered/aligned as applicable.
Procedure
- Start test ≥ 2 hours before planned departure.
- Verify steering in all modes:
- Normal (Bridge): hard-over both sides; confirm indicators.
- NFU: local control response & return to amidships.
- Wing (P/S): transfer control to each wing; verify execution.
- Trick Wheel (if fitted): function check and response.
- Confirm power failure (A/V) and off-course alarms.
- Engage autopilot; confirm steady course (note sea state).
- Steering flat: check telemotor oil level, pumps, leaks, accumulator pressure.
- Complete and sign DCL-02 Steering Gear Test; Master to review.

Acceptance Criteria
All modes functional; alarms pass; no leaks/abnormalities; record completed and signed.
